Military GPS
The GPS was first conceptualised and implemented by the U.S. Navy for land, sea and air navigation around the world in all weather condition. The first GPS satellite was launched into space in 1978.
Accuracy with P(Y) Code
GPS receivers used by military are different fromt those available commercially. This military grade GPS can access to the special information transmitted via the encrypted signal - P(Y) code. This additional information make military GPS more reliable in providing accurate position quickly.
Typical, a U.S. soldier in the field using his GPS can pinpoint location to within 1m accuracy.
Weapon Guidance
This is where GPS technology is used to guide missile to accurately destroy target from thousands of miles away.
The power of GPS was successfully demonstrated in the Guif War. That was when the world first came to know about smart bomb. GPS technology enables the US to launch offensive around-the-clock and even in all weather condition.
However, there are devices known as GPS jammers made by the Russians. These GPS jamming devices are believed to be able to cause GPS receivers to malfunction and are used to counter smart bombs.
